For those of you who want to root your Nexus 4 Android smartphone, here’s a step-by-step tutorial showing you how to root a Nexus 4 on Windows, Linux/Ubuntu, or Mac OSX computer.

This works for all Android versions including Android 4.2.1 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.4.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3 , 4.4.4 KitKat. (For rooting Android 4.3, 4.4, 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4 the steps are exactly same except for Step 15, you need to download the latest version of SuperSU from ChainFire and use that instead of the one provided.)

This rooting guide will allow you to also backup and restore your apps/settings.

Before we begin, please BACK UP EVERYTHING on your internal storage of Nexus 4 to your hard disk (you can do this by connecting it to your computer via USB cable or use AirDroid app).

Also, video tutorial detailing the steps is provided for all Windows, Linux/Ubuntu, and Mac OSX, so please refer to the video if this is your first time rooting an Android device.

Download Nexus4Root.zip

Step 1. Go to Settings->About Phone on your Nexus 4.

Step 2. Hit the “Build Number” couple times until your phone says, “You are now a developer”.  Hit the back button.

Step 3. You will now see extra menu called “Developer options”, hit it.

Step 4. Make sure Developer options is ON and USB debugging is also checked then connect a micro-USB cable from your Nexus 4 to your computer.

Step 5. For Windows, you will need to install drivers.  If you have Linux/Ubuntu or Mac OSX, skip to Step 7.

Step 6. Open Device Manager on your computer and update the Nexus 4 with exclamation mark with drivers provided in Nexus4Root.zip.

If you see something like “Android ADB Interface” you are ready for the next step.

Step 7. Open a command prompt (or terminal for Linux/Ubuntu or Mac) and type:

For Windows:

cd Downloads

cd Nexus4Root

adb backup -apk -all -f backup.ab

For Linux/Ubuntu:
sudo -i
cd /home/UserName/Downloads/Nexus4Root
chmod 755 *
./adb-linux backup -apk -all -f backup.ab

For Mac OSX:
cd Downloads
cd Nexus4Root
chmod 755 *
./adb-mac backup -apk -all -f backup.ab

Step 8. Go to your phone and you should see a Pop-up window asking you if you want to backup your data, hit “Back up my data”.  This will backup all of your settings, apps, app data, wifi passwords, etc…etc…  It will NOT BACKUP contents of your internal storage such as your personal videos/photos (you should have done that before following this guide!!!).

Step 9. Once backup is done, go ahead and turn your Nexus 4 power off.  Then hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons together for about 5 seconds.

Step 10. Once in bootloader menu, connect a micro-USB cable from your Nexus 4 to your computer.

Step 11. Open up Device Manager again, if you don’t see “Android ADB Interface” you will have to install drivers again.  Repeat Step 5 to install drivers.  For Ubuntu/Linux or Mac OSX, skip to Step 12, no drivers required!

Step 12. Next go back to command prompt/terminal and type:

For Windows:

fastboot oem unlock

For Linux/Ubuntu:

./fastboot-linux oem unlock

For Mac OSX:

./fastboot-mac oem unlock

Step 13. Go to your Nexus 4, hit the Volume Up button to select “Yes” and hit the Power button.  Then hit the Power button again to re-boot your phone.

Step 14. Once re-booted, your Nexus 4 will be like the day you got it, everything wiped and starting from scratch.  Go ahead and sign in.

Step 15. Connect your Nexus 4 to your computer and copy the file CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip to anywhere on your Nexus 4.

*NOTE: For Android 4.3 or 4.4, 4.4.2, 4.4.3 KitKat, download SuperSU v1.99 here and copy it instead!!!

If you have trouble on Mac OSX connecting to your Nexus 4, download and install Android File Transfer.

Also, if you have more trouble, you can download this file with your Nexus 4′s browser at DownloadAndroidROM.com. (It will be saved in your Downloads folder btw.)

Step 16. Re-boot into the bootloader like you did in Step 9 and connect a micro-USB cable from your Nexus 4 to your computer.

Step 17. Go back to your command prompt/terminal and type:

For Windows:

fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-mako.img

For Linux/Ubuntu:

./fastboot-linux flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-mako.img

For Mac/OSX:

./fastboot-mac flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-mako.img

Step 18. Go back to your Nexus 4, choose “Recovery mode” using Volume buttons and hit the Power button.

Step 19. Once in ClockworkMod(CWM) Recovery, choose “install zip from sdcard”.

Step 20. Next, choose “choose zip from sdcard”.

Step 21. Choose “0/”.

Step 22. Choose “CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip” and hit “Yes”.  This is the actual rooting file, which included su binaries and SuperSU app, giving your phone root.  This is the only part of this tutorial that actually roots your Nexus 4.  We only did all the other steps to unlock the bootloader and install CWM Recovery which allows us to install this file on our phone.

Step 23. Choose “Reboot” from the main menu, if you see the following screen, make sure to choose “Yes – Disable recovery flash”.  This is so you will have permanent CWM recovery as stock Android operating system overwrites it on re-boot if you don’t say yes here.

Step 24. Once rebooted you should find an extra app in the app drawer called “SuperSU”.  Congratulations!  You’ve successfully rooted your Nexus 4!  You can download rooted apps like Titanium Backup app (which I highly recommend you to run once) and verify you have full root.

Step 25. Now, let’s try to restore some of your settings, apps, and app data.  If you did make a backup of your internal storage before you started rooting, go ahead and copy all your files back into Nexus 4 internal storage.

Next, go back to command prompt/terminal and type:

For Windows:

adb restore backup.ab

For Linux/Ubuntu:

./adb-linux restore backup.ab

For Mac OSX:

./adb-mac restore backup.ab

Once that’s done, you should find your Nexus 4 fully restore with all of your settings, apps, app data, and your photos/videos plus rooted phone.  Congrats!

yes, here we are. Max thank you you’re the best

    • James says:

I’ve used your tutorials for my Note (i717), my S3 (i747), and now my Nexus 4. All of which, have been successfully rooted, the first time through. Thank you so much Max. You’re awesome!!

  2. Johnhany97 says:

Off-topic, You should fix the Subscribe button from Samsung Galaxy S2 to Google Nexus 4 :D Thanks for your AMAZING Work !!!

  3. Murph says:

    Hi,

When I tried to go into Recovery mode after flashing CWM I get stuck at the google logo.

    How can I fix this?

    • ChochiWpg says:

Power down your phone and then turn it back on and manually enter fastboot mode (holding power button and volume down at the same time). Once in that mode press the up arrow until you get to where it says recovery mode. Press the power button. Now wipe cache and reboot. It should boot up for you now.

  4. JEFV19 says:

how do you know your backup was properly made?

  5. Howard says:

I just finished rooting after watching ur tutorial. However, when I go to my gallery, I can’t view my photos.. U mentioned them being cached. Can u elaborate on how to copy what u backed up back to internal storage? If u can give me a step-by-step instruction on how to do that.

  6. S says:

So I didn’t know I could use Linux/Ubuntu to root my Nexus 4. Spent few hours in trying to install the drivers on Windows yesterday which didn’t work in the end. Tried in Ubuntu today and it worked in 15 minutes! Thanks for the tutorial!

  7. mondy says:

    when is odin method comming

  8. Josuhu says:

Does this method include busybox ?

  9. jesus says:

ODIN is only for samsung if im not mistaken

  10. Troy says:

when i type in “adb backup -apk -all -f backup.ab” it says that
    * daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037*
    * daemon started successfully *
adb: unable to connect for backup
idk what that means?!? What should I do?

    • William Calderon says:

I have the same problem can you help?

      • Alex says:

Yep exact same here. My driver installed well so I dont see where is the issue.

        • Alex says:

I installed the full sdk, updated one driver (I guess this is the issue). Then I do confirm that I trusted my computer and voila a 230mo backup is done.

          • Hassan says:

still getting the same message: adb: unable to connect for backup…..a little help here Zedomax
i updated the Driver and now i am seeing Nexus 4 as connected, also i installed full SDK

          • admin says:

it’s your drivers, check its installed correctly.

        • anonym says:

          It’s not the driver!
What the how-to forget to mention is that you have to get developer access and enable USB debugging once again after the reset!
So before the last point you have to do 1-4 again and it will be fine!

          • thedjdoorn says:

But I reinstalled the driver like 4 times and it still doesn’t work! But there is a Toolkit built by Mark Skippen, can i use it instead for backup if this method doesn’t work? And than follow the rest of this tutorial?

    • Izate says:

Run adb version to find out which version of ADB you are running. If it is less than 1.0.31, you should upgrade. The ADB executable in the zip file is 1.0.17. Download the android SDK latest version and use the ADB.exe and fastboot from /sdk/platform-tools folder

      • Keane says:

I have the same problem as Troy. I thought its my driver problem, so I uninstalled the adb interface. However, there is a nexus 4 adb interface auto installed after I uninstalled the previous adb. Now I am clueless on what to do next, even if I want to reinstall the previous adb, it still auto install the nexus 4 adb. With the nexus 4 adb I am still stuck with the same problem.

      • Batux says:

I had the same problem at Step 25. In my case updating adb to 1.0.31 works. This is the link I used to update adb: http://sourceforge.net/projects/adbstandalone/

    • Smollet says:

      Connect phone as Camera (PTP)

    • kamikazi says:

its something else update your adb i mean search net for adb and download lastes sorry can’t give link

max always put the oldest version and run all to problems and waste days!!!

  11. rob says:

I am following the instructions, but I can’t get passed step 12. when I connect the microusb cable and type in the command to ./adb-mac oem unlock, it just lists the adb help file. when i type adb-mac devices, it shows nothing under list of devices attached. when I type adb-mac usb it says error: device not found.

    what am I doing wrong?

    I am using a macbook, and my Nexus 4 is a 16BG Android 4.2.2
    Fastbook mode
    product name – mako
    bootloader version MakoZ10o
    Baseband M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.48
    Secured boot enabled
    lock state locked

    please help

    • Jesus Pinon says:

I think its because of the OS ,I’ve read on some forum that 4.2.2 messed up the adv , also u said that u type ./adb-mac OEM unlock ….you have to be in fastboot to unlock the bootloader so boot into fastboot ( power volume down) then type ./fastboot-mac OEM unlock

  12. rob says:

I found the problem. the written instructions says to type ./adb-mac oem unlock, but the video instruction says to type ./fastboot-mac oem unlock, and that works.

thanks for the 99.999% perfect instructions, now I have a rooted nexus 4!!

    • Kristjan Adojaan says:

One more thing to note – you have to launch fastboot with sudo! I did not notice above sudo -i and without it does not work. So sudo ./fastboot-linux oem unlock

  13. rob says:

Will I loose the rooted status if I do a system provided android OS upgrade? So next time that Google releases 4.2.3(?) upgrade to 4.2.2, do I have to re-root my phone?

Any words of wisdom to a noob rooted Nexus 4 user?
For example, I heard that a rooted Nexus 4 shoulbd not use Google Wallet for security concerns.
Does that mean that a rooted phone is less secured, and I should not keep sensitive data like SSN in my phone address book?
any other concerns, like what not to upgrade, what not to install, etc.?

    Thanks for any heads-up.

    • Jesus Pinon says:

Since you have installed a custom recovery I would highly recommend NOT doing an OTA update , you will brick the phone.if you want OTA you will need to flash Stock recovery ……regarding the Google wallet I’ve never heard that (but I don’t use it anyway hahah)

      • rob says:

thanks. rigth now, i am not sure if i did the rght thing by rooting. i am sure later i’ll end up loving it, but right now, not knowing much, i hate it. hate being a noob. thanks for all the help

        • jesus says:

Right now it might seem like what’s the point but once you get into it and learn how to do it its actually really fun .plus if u don’t like it its very easy to unroot and go back to stock that why I Love Nexus devices!

          • rob says:

Thanks again for the great instructions! So far, I like having my Nexus 4 rooted. I can run rooted apps, specially a true firewall. My only concern still is whether my phone is more vulnerable to security concerns. Like, should I no longer install apps from unknown sources? should I check security the box that says “verify apps and disallow installation of apps that might cause harm”? What is you experience (re: security) with rooted phones? Thanks for anything you can advise.

    • jeeps says:

You should not keep sensitive data in your contacts even on a stock phone. Many popular apps have permissions to access contacts.

  14. rob says:

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I was not able to copy back the contents of my nexus 4 after rooting. The instructions says to first copy the contents of the Nexus 4 to my local hard drive, and after rooting but before restoring the settings back, to copy back what I copied to my local drive back to the Nexus 4 (Step 25).
Well, when I try to copy back, Android File Transfer will not let me copy some/most of the files. How important is it to copy them back? what can i do if some files will not copy back? is it better to let google play reinstall all my apps? and if google play auto-reinstall my apps, will the copying back and the restoring of the setting mess up my apps?

Finally, about SuperSU settings, should I install SuperSU into/system? check Trust System User? should I clean up Reinstall from google play? Switch supperuser app?

    Thanks

  15. rob says:

    ARRRGGGG!!!

I am still having difficulties restoring after rooting. when I type ./adb-mac restore backup.ab, it says adb: unable to connect for backup

when I type ./adb-mac remount it says error: device offline

    what am I doing wrong?

Also, is there a way to re-root my nexus 4? instead of me copying back backups to the Nexus 4, how can I have to nexus 4 back to the initial nexus 4 state right after rooting? I can just re-install my apps from a clean nexus 4 state instead of all these backup restoring and having a bunch of unnecessary files.

  16. daryl says:

when i go to the nexus4root.zip the download never takes place. what could i be doing wrong?

    • jesus says:

Idk what’s it is either the entire site isn’t working what I did is I found the Su package else were and filash a recovery From XDA when I get home I could try to past a link of what I used

      • daryl says:

that would be great. I rooted my htc evo a couple of years ago but i cant remember the process all that well. when i do download the .zip, do I unzip it and where? should i make a folder for this entire process?

        • jesus says:

Yes, you will need to unzip the initial folder and thats ….doesn’t matter where u unzip to as long as you point the terminal to that folder that’s that’s it.
The zip folder that I download included everything the only thing is that the zip on the Sites is more up to date well the recovery is but all I did was pull it from xda

    • xx420blazeclannoscope360x420xx says:

Try disabling your ad blocker. Worked for me.

  17. jesus says:

I wish I could help you with this but I skipped the entire backup cause it really did care lol once my phone left the box it was Rooted hahaha . but to try to.answer or question I would worry the back up restore like personal files and.apps, u can just re download from play store ( regarding apps) . yes when u unlock boot loader it wipes everything but once the phone boot the necessary files the phone needs will be there

  18. Wayne says:

There are a few problems in your how-to guide.
Step 12 should be fastboot and not adb
Step 25 should mention that you need to enable debugging again

  19. benji1801 says:

Thanks for your tutorial, it’s very clear !

  20. mondy says:

will there ever be an easier method?

  21. Phillip T says:

Im using Ubuntu 12.10 dual booting with windows xp….do I need to download and install the platform tools from the SDK for Ubuntu or is it in the nexus4root.zip folder cause I can’t get Ubuntu to recognize my nexus 4 as a adb device when I type ./adb-linux devices it says no such directory :-(

    • Devian says:

Phillip, you need to unconpress the zip then move into that folder then run the command, the erro you’re saying is not tha Ubuntu can’t access the device but saying that the command in this case adb-linux devices can’t be found on the directory you’re working on

  22. willie shelby says:

hey max, have a huge problem that i hope you can help me with, have the nexus 4 device and i tried out the preview of the ubuntu on my nexus. after using the method to restore back to android it now will only boot into fastboot mode or recovery with no rom in my storage or no backups in my recovery. ive tried to adb push the rom to the device and the push is successful, but when i check in my install folder no files are there. any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance.

  33. Anuar says:

ive already updated the drivers but still getting de adb: unable to connect for backup…please HELPPPP!!!! i really want to root mu nexus 4!!!!

  34. Venkat says:

Thanks for your tutorial. I did get stuck at the oem unlock and then figured out it was fastboot and not adb-linux.

However, I am now stuck being unable to restore my backup. Whenever I try to restore, it asks me for the password etc and then it starts the restore. All I can see is android and then the phone reboots. Is there something that has gone wrong that is preventing me from restoring my data?

    Thanks,
    Venkat

  35. Souheil says:

Great tuto but there is a small mistake in step 12, you’re using fastboot not adb at this point.

  36. Kiran says:

    Hey,

I’m not able to install the drivers which u had provided to me in NExus4Root package,
in device manager it still should exclamation mark beside Nexus 4,
    OS: Windows 7

    • admin says:

Try it again, there’s a menu where you need to select “all devices” if you choose the wrong one, it won’t let you install.

  37. derick says:

Whenever I try to type “./adb-mac devices” on the Mac Terminal it says “dyld: unknown required load command 0×80000022
    Trace/BPT trap”

I’ve been doing everything correctly!!! Help?!? What do I do??? I don’t know how to get it right!!! I’m doing everything correctly!!!

  38. Joe Zhao says:

The Step 12 is use 「./fastboot-mac oem unlock」,not adb.

  39. Charles says:

When I type in ./fastboot-mac OEM unlock it just opens up the “Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.31″ please help

  40. Jared says:

I did everything you said but after i send the recovery it just hangs at “sending ‘recovery’ ” forever and what proceed. what should i do?? ill post this comment on your youtube video too.

    • Jared says:

i figured it out to all who are interested: its because i was not using the included oem usb cord. WOW.

  41. __jo__ says:

    Many thanks for this tuto

on step 12 there is an error on the script, you wrote
    > adb oem unlock
    when it’s
    > fastboot oem unlock

    the video is ok (offcourse)

  42. KARAN GUPTA says:

Does this method include busybox ?

  43. Calvin says:

I can’t get a working adb connection. When I want to backup my data, it always says: adb: unable to connect for backup

When I uninstall drivers for the phone, reboot my computer and connect my Nexus 4 again, it is installing new driver software. Named “Nexus 4 adb drivers” or something like that. Does anyone know why I can’t get a working adb connection?

  46. Dipendra Pokharel says:

Step 12 : it should be fastboot instead of adb.
In my case adb didnt work but fastboot did.

  47. KARAN GUPTA says:

is there a way to unroot?????

  48. m3rv says:

Everything is OK, until I want to restore backup… It hot-resets my phone and no restoring is done… Any idea how to solve it?

    • m3rv says:

Looks like Titanium Backup PRO Donation imported from ADB backup and applied backup – rooted without loss :) ( not counting $5 for app) :) P.S. Don’t forget to enable UNKNOWN SOURCES!!!

  49. Tom says:

trying to root nexus4.2.2 but getting error when running adb backup:
    unable to connect for backup
adb devices shows it as offline

I read somewhere that this is due to ver 1.0.29 of adb and that 1.0.31 fixes the issue.
Is this the case? Do you plan on updating the Nexus4Root package?

That’s what I get from using an old tutorial…. sigh..

I had an error when backup after root, I have made a mix with most solutions
    1) install lasteste drivers from sdk (version 7)
    2) replace in nexus4root folder adb.exe with thes lastest version in full sdk located in folder “sdk\platform-tools”

    and it’s working fine !!!

  51. Glenn Dixon says:

NONE of this is working – so frustrating!

.adb-linux fails – Failed to execute process ‘./adb-linux’. Reason:
The file ‘./adb-linux’ does not exist or could not be executed.

if I try it with sudo I get right back to the prompt with no errors, but nothing happens.

the file is right there – all files are chmod 755

    I really don’t get it…

  59. Yallhi says:

Hi there, I flashed the factory image of 4.2.2 and updated to 4.3 the completely normal way (no root, no CWM installation, just stock recovery adb sideload), and I should be basically rooted because I flashed clockwork recovery (version 6.0.3.5) and installed SuperSU V1.41 from recovery mode. When I open up SuperSU app, it says there’s no SU binary installed. It’s saying I need to reroot, but I don’t think so. Is this just because there hasn’t been a SuperSU compatible yet with Android 4.3 yet? (P.S., I’m sure I don’t need to reroot, because yesterday when I was on 4.2.2 rooted, I updated to 4.3 through clockwork recovery installation. When I opened SuperSU, it gave me the same message, asking me to re-root. So the second time, I’m pretty sure it was a default message assuming that I updated to 4.3 while rooted, though not true).

    Thanks.

  63. Josh Surber says:

I had my phone rooted under 4.2.2 and lost it at 4.3. Tried to re-root but SuperSU is saying su is not installed and can’t be installed. I am using the new version, and can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.

    • admin says:

did u try flashing supersu zip file with cwm.

      • Josh Surber says:

Yes, multiple times. The guide says to install zip file; should I sideload zip file instead? I think I read somewhere someone screwed their phone up costing that by mistake and I don’t know a lot about the inner workings of Android so I’m a bit scared to try.

  64. Maxi says:

When I try to open SuperSU it allways says “There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root -consult the relevant forums for your device!”. My Nexus 4 is on Android 4.3. I already updated SuperSU form the Play Store, and I tried to install it from sd card again. What I have to do to get root access?

You have a slight mistake in step 12 for Mac:
the command should be ./fastboot-mac oem unlock (as in the video), and not *./adb-mac oem unlock*, since we are indeed in fastboot mode.

I’ve been looking at this “How to ROOT Nexus 4″ article and the same 5 or so ROMS for over a month now!!! Am I really to beleive that no one is making any new ROMS for the Nexus 4 because that is just not true. Even the article about the PACman ROM is outdated…there’s at least 2-3 newer PACman versions available but if you just go by THIS site you will never get to experience any of them. Hi. I’ve got a problem. I used that tutorial before, everything works fine for me. But after oem update to Android 4.3, recovery got wiped and I lost root. When I’m trying to log in to recovery – exclamation mark with android icon appears. So, I tried to flash recovery again, but, I can’t now connect Nexus 4 neither from Win environment, nor from Linux. Maybe it’s somehow connected with wiped recovery? On Win7 I just can’t install drivers, on linux I’ve got ia32-libs and libncurses5:i386 libraries installed – No such file or directory found.
Now I have trouble with my touchscreen. It has non-sensitive area right in the middle of the screen. I decided to roll back to 4.2, but I can’t, could not connect device. Maybe somebody have any ideas how I could solve my problem with connection?

    Open Terminal and type:
    cd Desktop
    cd 4.2UnrootNexus4.zip
    ./fastboot-mac flash bootloader bootloader-mako-makoz10l.img
    ./fastboot-mac reboot-bootloader
    ./fastboot-mac flash radio radio-mako-m9615a-cefwmazm-2.0.1700.33.img
    ./fastboot-mac reboot-bootloader
    ./fastboot-mac -w update image-occam-jop40c.zip

everything on my terminal says okay
    as in..

    checking product…
    OKAY
    checking version-bootloader…
    OKAY
    checking version-baseband…
    OKAY
    sending ‘boot’
    OKAY
    writing ‘boot’…
    OKAY
    sending ‘recovery’
    OKAY
    writing ‘recovery’…
    OKAY
    erasing ‘system’…
    OKAY
    sending ‘system’…
and this part said something failed or system fail did not send

i did not get an OKAY for (sending ‘system’)
the guys guide said after i did all those commands and everything goes through that my phone will reboot in like 5min and it did but it gets stuck on the google screen and wont go past that; not even to the google colors screen.

SUCCESSFULLY ROOTED my NEXUS 4 (mako) THANK YOU very much!!!!
    Kernel 3.4.0-perf-g2cae413
    Android 4.4.2
    Build number
    KOT49H
    It was STOCK everything
For all of you having problems after Android 4.3, 4.4, 4.4.2,
Follow the exact same steps BUT the following files need to be used instead

Step 15. Connect your Nexus 4 to your computer and copy the file CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip to anywhere on your Nexus 4. Instead……. use this below instead SU 1.89
    http://download.chainfire.eu/376/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.89.zip

Step 17. Go back to your command prompt/terminal and type: USE THIS FILE INSTEAD and put it on your Nexus4root folder previously to this step
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager go down to Google Nexus 4 click on 6.0.4.3 far right ( direct link http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-mako.img)

Hope this helps, the info I found it HERE same website, other posts, worked perfect for me, took me a good while but the tutorial is fine, same steps, just need the latest versions of files

    Hi There.
In the last time i use the kingo root to root my nexus 4, to use a recovery files app (i have deleted some photos by mistake).
But the root doesnt work, and now i do all exactly as you discribe and the root still not working.
I have ”lost” all data in the first time, and know i got nothing.
The phone is with fastboot unluck and all but the root still doesnt working. (my phone is a nexus 4 4.4.2)

    Thanks

Great Tutorial. Both text and video version. I successfully rooted my Nexus 4 (4.4.2).
    My Current setup is:
    - Android 4.4.2
    - Kernel 3.4.0-pref-g2cae413
    - Build Number KOT49H
    and Ubunutu 10.04

There are two things challenged me a little bit.
    1) As Jorge wrote in their comment, if you already have Android 4.4.2 on your device, you have to download http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-mako.img and place it in your Nexus4Root folder (or whatever name it has).
    2) The other thing is, if you are using any kind of linux distro and previous item applies to you, you have to remember to chmod 755 the new recovery file again. If this file does not have executable permission it just won’t being sent on your device, let alone being written.

Hey, I followed all the instructions and got to trying out downloading Titanium backup but when I launched it, it said I didn’t have root access. the message that came up was this:

    Error

Sorry, I oculd not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again.

This attempt was made using the “/system/xbin/su” command.

I did this on Windows 8.1, Nexus 4 is on 4.4.2.
